Tuesday morning we had a first for us.
We noticed that there were a couple ducks hanging around by our storm drain. They stayed there for a while which we thought was odd. Then a customer walked in and said he heard some baby ducks in the drain. Without hesitation we grabbed a box, some chains, and the forklift and operation: save the ducks commenced!
The first task was getting the storm grate covering the hole off. That's where the forklift came in. We fastened some chains around the grate and attached them to the forklift. Steadily, we raised the forks up and the grate came right off.
Sean, our Shop Manager, climbed in the hole and started rescuing the ducklings. One by one he placed 6 ducks in the box. The mama duck had been hanging out across the street by a neighborhood pond so Sean and Boyd took the 6 rescued ducks there to reunite. The mama quickly came over to the ducklings, gathered them all in a line, and went on about their way!
A few minutes later another customer came in and told us that there were 5 more ducks stuck in the other part of the drainage ditch. This time no forklift was needed but we did need to wrangle them up and reunite them with the rest of the bunch.
Do you know how hard it is to catch 5 baby ducks on foot in a wide open parking lot? Those little guys are quick! They had everyone running around trying to catch them. After a few failed dives into the ditch to keep them from running into the busy road, all 5 ducks were safely and successfully caught and placed into the box.
Once again, Sean made his way over to the neighborhood pond and reunited the 5 ducklings with the rest of their family. It didn't take long before the mama and all 11 babies were walking along all in a row.
It's not always about the hot rods or making money. Sometimes you just need to take a few minutes and do something for someone else. We all felt pretty good seeing the mama and all her ducklings together again.
