Melted Cats from a Bad Tune and Bad Gas

January 22, 2019

We always preach about using good fuel and having a good tune in your performance car, especially your daily driven hot rod.  We had a great example this week about why this is so important! The last time you went cheap on the gas for a few tanks and you think it didn’t hurt anything - did you look at your cats? Most likely not since they are pretty difficult to get to and visibly see.  Or maybe the last time your tuner tuned your car he may have made it a little too rich not knowing the repercussions of what he has done. We had a first hand glimpse of just what either one of these two dangerous things can do to a car’s cats this week.  While upgrading to high flow cats on a Mustang we found the cats that were on the car were 95% blocked - if not more.  Imagine how much horsepower this would literally be blocking and hindering the performance!  After checking in on the tune we found it to be a little on the rich side and the customer may not have always put the best fuel he could in the car from time to time. When working with a modified and high horsepower car these elements need to be perfectly in tune and working together to optimize the engine performance and exhaust flow.
